NIA Workers to Resume Work Today (Friday) After NLC Directive
Staff of the National Identification Authority (NIA) are expected to resume work today, Friday, May 15, 2026, following a directive from the National Labour Commission (NLC) to suspend their ongoing strike.
This brings a quick end to the industrial action that began on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, and had disrupted Ghana Card registration and other services nationwide.
Background of the Strike
NIA workers, under the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU), embarked on the strike over delays in the approval and implementation of a migration report concerning their conditions of service.
The strike caused significant inconvenience to the public, especially applicants who had queued at various NIA offices for Ghana Card registration, renewals, and other services.
NLC Intervention and Resolution
Following a hearing on Thursday, May 14, 2026, involving the PSWU, NIA management, and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the National Labour Commission issued a directive for the workers to immediately call off the strike.
Bernard Adjei, General Secretary of the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU), confirmed the union’s compliance:
“As a responsible union, we have taken the directive in good faith; we think it is fair. We believe that with this directive, all parties will honour their side of the obligations so that we can bring the matter to a close.”
He assured that all NIA staff will return to their posts today, Friday, May 15.
Key Outcomes
- The NLC has directed the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to facilitate the approval and implementation of the migration report by the end of May 2026.
- Both the union and management expressed optimism that stakeholders, particularly the Ministry of Finance and FWSC, will fulfil their commitments.
- Normal operations at NIA offices across the country are expected to resume fully today.
Impact on the Public
The brief strike highlighted the critical role of the NIA in national identification services. Many Ghanaians who were affected by the closure of registration centres can now return to complete their processes.
