Important update: Applications for the 2027–2028 Chevening Scholarship opened on 4 August 2026 and will close on 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC.
What is the Chevening Scholarship?
Chevening is the UK Government’s international scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations.
The programme gives outstanding professionals from eligible countries the opportunity to undertake a one-year master’s degree in the UK. Beyond academic study, Chevening places considerable emphasis on leadership, professional relationships, influence and the applicant’s plans to create positive change in their home country.

- Opening date: 4 August 2026
- Closing date: 6 October 2026
- Closing time: 11:00 UTC
- Interview period: March–April 2027

For applicants in Ghana, the official Ghana Chevening page confirms that applications are open until 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC.
What does the Chevening Scholarship cover?
Chevening is described as a fully funded scholarship. The normal scholarship package includes:
- Payment of tuition fees
- Economy return travel to and from your country of residence
- Monthly personal living allowance (stipend)
- Arrival allowance
- Departure allowance
- Cost of the entry-clearance/visa application
- Up to £75 contribution towards TB testing, where required
- Travel top-up allowance for eligible scholars
- Access to Chevening’s engagement and networking programme
The stipend is intended to cover reasonable basic living expenses, including accommodation, meals, personal expenses, phone bills, daily travel and required course resources. The amount differs depending on whether you study in London or elsewhere and is subject to annual review.
Important: Fully funded does not necessarily mean that every personal expense you incur in the UK will be paid separately. Applicants should still plan their finances carefully.
Who is eligible for Chevening?
To qualify, you generally need to meet all of Chevening’s eligibility requirements.
1. You must be a citizen of an African country or….
You must be a citizen of a country or territory that participates in Chevening.
2. You must return to your home country
You must commit to returning to your country of award for at least two years after your scholarship ends.
This is important because Chevening is designed to develop leaders who will use their knowledge and networks to contribute to their countries.
3. You need at least 2,800 hours of work experience
Applicants must have at least 2,800 hours of work experience acquired after completing their undergraduate degree. Chevening describes this as approximately two years of full-time work based on a 35-hour working week.
Eligible experience can include:
- Full-time employment
- Part-time employment
- Voluntary work
- Paid internships
- Unpaid internships
You can enter up to 15 employment periods in the application system, and the system calculates your total hours based on your dates and hours per week.
Important: You cannot simply wait until you have two years of experience by the time your Master’s begins. You must already meet the minimum work-experience requirement when you submit your Chevening application.

4. You need an undergraduate degree
You must hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for admission to a UK master’s programme.
For the current cycle, Chevening states that your undergraduate studies must have been completed at least two years before the application deadline.
5. You must choose three eligible UK Master’s courses
You must select three different eligible master’s courses on your Chevening application.
They can be:
- Three different courses at one university, or
- Similar courses at different universities.
Chevening recommends choosing courses that are similar and connected to your career goals.
Your courses must generally:
- Be full-time
- Be taught master’s programmes
- Lead to a master’s degree
- Be based in the UK
- Start in the autumn term
- Last between 9 and 12 months
- Not be distance-learning programmes
- Not be PhDs/DPhils
- Not require more than one month of study outside the UK
Is an IELTS or English test required for Chevening?
Chevening itself does not have an English-language test requirement.
However, this does not mean you can ignore English-language requirements. The universities you apply to may require IELTS, TOEFL or another accepted English qualification, depending on their admission rules.
Therefore, always check the English-language requirements of each university and course you select.
Who cannot apply?
You are not eligible if, among other circumstances, you:
- Hold British or dual British citizenship, subject to the specific exceptions stated by Chevening
- Are resident in the UK at the time of application, subject to Chevening’s stated exceptions
- Hold refugee status in a country that is not Chevening-eligible
- Are an employee, certain immediate relative of an employee, or recent former employee of specified UK government departments, the British Council, a partner UK university or their wholly owned subsidiaries
- Have previously studied in the UK with a UK Government-funded scholarship, subject to Chevening’s specific rules and exceptions.
Having previously completed a master’s degree does not automatically prevent you from applying for another master’s degree in the UK.
What documents do you need?
This is an important point that many applicants misunderstand.
Instead, you provide information through the online application form, including your:
- Personal details
- Citizenship information
- Education history
- Work history
- Three course choices
- Two referees
- Four essay responses
If you are invited to interview
You will then need to provide documentation, including:
1. Passport or national ID
Chevening accepts a passport or national ID card as identification for the interview stage.
2. Undergraduate degree certificate
You must provide your official undergraduate degree certificate/diploma.
Chevening specifically says that undergraduate transcripts are not accepted as a replacement for the degree certificate for this requirement.
3. Two reference letters
You need two referees.
They may be:
- Two professional referees
- Two academic referees
- One professional and one academic referee
Your referees should know you professionally or personally but should not be your friends or relatives.
The reference letters must be in English. If a reference is written in another language, Chevening requires the original plus a notarised English translation.
Chevening’s four essay areas
The application asks applicants to demonstrate more than academic ability.
1. Leadership and influencing
Chevening wants evidence that you have actually led, influenced others, solved problems or created positive change.
Strong examples can involve:
- Leading a project
- Organising an initiative
- Improving a service
- Mobilising people
- Solving a community problem
- Influencing an organisation or group
Chevening emphasises specific examples and tangible results, rather than simply saying that you are a good leader.
2. Networking and professional relationships
You need to demonstrate how you have built and maintained meaningful relationships and how collaboration produced positive results.
The key is to show:
Relationship, your contribution, outcome, what you learned.
3. Course and university choice
You need to explain why your first-choice course is appropriate for your background and future plans.
Chevening wants you to research your courses and explain how specific modules or areas of study will give you the knowledge and skills needed to address your chosen challenge.
4. Career plan and impact
Your career plan should contain realistic:
- Short-term goals
- Medium-term goals
- Long-term goals
You should explain how your career will contribute to positive change in your country and how the scholarship will help you achieve those goals.
