The programme was started by A.G. Leventis himself and has operated for decades (now exclusively at postgraduate level since the early 1990s). Over the last 45–46 years the Foundation has awarded more than 6,750–7,250 scholarships across fields including the Humanities, Social Sciences, Technology, Arts, Formal and Natural Sciences, Medicine, and Business.

Key features

  • Eligibility: Open to applicants of any nationality and any age for full-time postgraduate or doctoral studies in the next academic year. Undergraduate studies, postdoctoral research, and distance-learning programmes are not supported.
  • No subject restrictions: Any field of study is eligible.
  • Partial funding only: Grants cover part of study expenses (the amount varies by country of study) and are not intended to cover the full cost. They are paid in two equal instalments (late November and late February).
  • Duration: Awarded annually; renewable for a maximum of 3 academic years in total (cumulative). Renewals and “repeating” applications (for a new degree after previous support) are possible within that limit.
  • Competition: Very competitive typically about 1 in 8 eligible applications is approved. Selection prioritises academic ability (previous record) and the applicant’s economic situation; other factors include field of study, university/country of admission, and the clarity/completeness of the application.
