Cape Coast Technical University Targets 30,000 Students by 2030

Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU) has set an ambitious goal to expand its student population to more than 30,000 by 2030, positioning itself as a leading hub for innovation, research, and technical education in Ghana.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Kwaku Adutwum Ayim Boakye announced the target during a press soirée organised by the university, outlining a broad range of academic, technological, and community-focused initiatives designed to drive growth and improve graduate competitiveness.

Rapid Enrolment Growth Already Underway

CCTU has recorded steady increases in student numbers in recent years. Enrolment rose from approximately 2,500 students in 2019 to 3,880 in 2023, with the current population now exceeding 7,000.

Management is working to push annual admissions beyond 4,000 through an initiative known as Operation 4K (also referred to as Agenda 4K). The campaign involves outreach to senior high, technical and vocational schools, community engagement, and digital marketing to attract more applicants nationwide.

Professor Boakye linked the projected growth to improved student services, including career and innovation fairs that enhance the university’s visibility and appeal.

New Academic Programmes and Digital Transformation

A major part of CCTU’s strategy involves expanding its academic offerings. The university plans to introduce 12 new postgraduate programmes in engineering, strengthening its capacity in technical and applied fields.

In addition, CCTU will make a mandatory soft skills programme incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI) compulsory for all students. Under the new policy, students will only be allowed to graduate after successfully completing the AI-based soft skills course. This move aims to equip graduates with both technical knowledge and essential employability competencies for the modern job market.

The university will also roll out a smart classroom project starting from the next academic year. The initiative is designed to create a technology-driven learning environment that better prepares students for industry demands.

Strengthening Research Output

CCTU is placing strong emphasis on research excellence. The university has already published its 2025 research report, which recorded a 53 per cent increase in research outcomes compared to the previous year. Work is ongoing on the 2026 edition, with expectations of even stronger results.

To support this growth, CCTU has established an institutional research office tasked with developing a comprehensive research agenda. An international conference support scheme has also been introduced to encourage staff to pursue high-impact research with global recognition.

Community Engagement and Partnerships

Beyond campus expansion, CCTU is deepening its role in community development. The university has undertaken outreach programmes and donations to selected communities. It has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Ankaful Prisons to provide skills training for inmates, equipping them with employable skills that can support their reintegration into society upon release.
