SHS Placement Results to Be Out on August 

The Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) Secretariat will release this year’s Senior High School (SHS) placement results on August, 2026. The release is expected to pave the way for the smooth commencement of the 2026/27 academic year.

This follows the successful completion of school selection by the more than 620,000 candidates who sat the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Pre-Placement Process Nearing Completion

According to Mr Hashmin Mohammed, Press Secretary to the Minister of Education, the pre-placement exercise — during which candidates select their preferred senior high and technical schools after checking their BECE results — was being conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

He noted that the exercise was expected to end around the time of the announcement, though the deadline could be extended if necessary.

“So far, our checks show that many students, with the support of their parents and guardians, have completed their school selection. We have not received any major reports from the field, so the exercise is expected to end as scheduled,” Mr Mohammed stated.

Once the selection process concludes, WAEC will submit the candidates’ data to the CSSPS Secretariat for processing before the official release of placement results on August 31.

Measures to Ease Placement Challenges

To minimise the usual challenges associated with the placement exercise, the Ministry of Education has expanded placement resolution centres to all 16 regions.

This decentralised approach will enable parents and candidates to resolve placement issues within their respective regions instead of travelling to Accra. Call centres will also be established to provide assistance and respond to complaints.

New “Results-First” Approach

This year’s process incorporates a significant change recommended by a committee set up by the Minister of Education after consultations with parents, students, guardians and other stakeholders following last year’s exercise.

Candidates were allowed to select their preferred schools only after the release of their BECE results. Officials expect this to reduce the number of placement-related complaints, as students can now make more realistic choices based on their actual performance.

Mr Mohammed urged candidates to accept the schools in which they are placed, explaining that the system matches students according to their academic strength and examination results.

“The system can only place candidates into schools for which they qualify. If a candidate selects schools beyond his or her performance, the system will automatically consider other available options,” he said.

Numbers and Next Steps

Although more than 620,000 candidates sat the 2026 BECE, the exact number to be placed will only be known after WAEC submits the final pre-placement data. Some candidates’ results have been withheld, while others may not have obtained the required grades for placement.

About 600,000 spaces are available in senior high schools and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions for this year’s admissions.

Plans to expand Category A schools to accommodate more students are still going through administrative and procurement processes. The Ministry remains optimistic that the expansion project will commence next year once all statutory approvals are secured.

Mr Mohammed appealed to parents and guardians to continue supporting their children throughout the process to ensure a smooth, transparent and efficient placement exercise.

With the August 31 release date now confirmed, candidates and parents can prepare for the next phase checking their placement status and making necessary arrangements ahead of the reopening of schools for the 2026/27 academic year.
