Lebanese Community Expands Scholarship Support for University of Ghana Law Students
In a heartwarming display of long-standing partnership, the Lebanese Community in Ghana has increased its annual scholarship slots for law students at the University of Ghana School of Law (UGSoL), awarding support to 14 deserving students this year.
The expansion comes after an appeal from the School’s leadership for a higher quota to reach more talented but financially challenged students. This year’s beneficiaries include six from Level 200, four from Level 300, and four from Level 400.
The awards were presented at a brief but colourful ceremony attended by senior university officials and representatives of the Lebanese Community and Embassy.

Mr. Mohamad Baalbaky, Chargé d’Affaires at the Lebanese Embassy in Ghana, delivered inspiring remarks. He emphasised Lebanon’s deep belief in the rule of law as the foundation of democratic stability, equality, freedom, and justice.
“Laws hold our societies together, promote equality, freedom and justice. Without it, no meaningful progress can be achieved.”
He described the rule of law as a powerful tool for social transformation and reaffirmed the Embassy and Community’s commitment to educational cooperation between Lebanon and Ghana. He urged the awardees to strive for greater academic and professional excellence.
Prof. Joseph A. Yaro, Provost of the College of Humanities, expressed profound gratitude to the Lebanese Community for their consistent support over the years. He described the decade-long partnership as a model of productive and mutually beneficial collaboration.
Prof. Peter A. Atupare, Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, noted that the scholarship has created healthy academic competition while significantly easing financial pressure on students and their families. He added that it continues to motivate students to stay on the merit-based programme.
Mr. Hisham Younes, a prominent member of the Lebanese Community, congratulated the beneficiaries and assured them of the Community’s continued support.
One of the awardees, Nahum Agyepong, spoke on behalf of the students. He thanked the donors and pledged that all beneficiaries would uphold the high values and integrity associated with the scholarship.
A Decade-Long Commitment
Now in its 13th year, the Lebanese Community Scholarship Programme has supported over 600 Ghanaian students across various disciplines, including:
- Law
- Journalism
- Public Relations
- Film and Television
- Performing Arts
- Language Studies
The programme stands as one of the most consistent private-sector contributions to higher education in Ghana, particularly in the legal field.
Why This Matters
Legal education is expensive, and many brilliant students face financial barriers that threaten to cut short their dreams. Scholarships like this one play a critical role in:
- Promoting access to quality legal education
- Developing the next generation of Ghanaian lawyers and judges
- Strengthening the rule of law through a diverse and well-trained legal workforce
- Fostering deeper people-to-people ties between the Lebanese and Ghanaian communities
The Lebanese Community in Ghana has a long and respected history of philanthropic support in education, health, and social development a contribution widely appreciated by Ghanaians.
