Android steps can differ slightly (e.g., Samsung vs. stock Android). Here’s the general process—start with the GAF-recommended path if it matches your device.
- Open the Messages App: Launch your default messaging app (e.g., Google Messages or Samsung Messages).
- Go to Settings: Tap the three dots (menu) in the top right > Select Settings.
- Find Cell Broadcast: Look for Cell Broadcast, Broadcast Messages, Emergency Alerts, or Wireless Emergency Alerts. It might be under More Settings or Advanced.
- Activate the Service: Toggle ON for “Cell Broadcast” or “Receive wireless emergency alerts”.
- Set Channels to Receive: If available, select Channels or Broadcast Channels > Choose All Channels or toggle on all options (e.g., Extreme Threats, Severe Threats, AMBER Alerts, Public Safety). Set to “Receive” or enable them.
- Alternative Path (If Not in Messages): Go to phone Settings > Search for “Emergency Alerts” or “Safety & Emergency” > Wireless Emergency Alerts > Toggle on alerts and set preferences.

Tip for Samsung Users: The GAF instructions align closely—Messages > Settings > More Settings > Broadcast Channels > Activate and enable all channels.
If you see options like “Alert Reminder” or “Vibration,” enable them for better visibility. Test by checking if you receive any public alerts (e.g., weather warnings).
For iPhone (iOS) Users
iOS handles this as Government Alerts or Emergency Alerts (no traditional “Cell Broadcast” label, but it serves a similar purpose for public messages). GAF updates might come through these channels.
- Open Settings: Tap the Settings app (gear icon).
- Go to Notifications: Scroll down and select Notifications.
- Find Government Alerts: Scroll to the bottom to the Government Alerts section.
- Enable Alerts: Toggle ON for Emergency Alerts, Public Safety Alerts, AMBER Alerts, and Test Alerts (if available). Also enable Local Awareness and Always Play Sound for reliability.
- No Specific Channels? iOS doesn’t have granular channel selection like Android; enabling these covers most public broadcasts. Set all to “ON” to receive everything.
