Ghana to Draw Lessons from Japan in Advancing STEM Education

Deputy Education Minister, Dr. Clement Apaak, has announced Ghana’s intention to learn from Japan’s success in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.

Strengthening STEM in Ghana’s Education Reform

Receiving a delegation from the Kumon Group, led by the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Hiroshi Yoshimoto, Dr. Apaak emphasized the government’s robust agenda to make STEM a cornerstone of educational reforms. He represented the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during the meeting in Accra.

According to Dr. Apaak, STEM will be introduced at the basic education level, with a special focus on mathematics and practical applications.

“The Minister wants to introduce STEM at the lower levels and is working to incorporate it at the Upper Primary level. Mathematics, STEM, and TVET are non-negotiable if we are to make real progress,” he stated.

He noted that Ghana had much to learn from Japan’s best practices in education and expressed optimism about the collaboration.

Japan’s Support for STEM in Ghana

Ambassador Yoshimoto reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting STEM initiatives in Ghana. He highlighted the importance of making STEM engaging and exciting to spark student enthusiasm.
