Students are offered these opportunities through partnerships with approximately 107 partner institutions in more than 36 countries around the globe. Notable among our strategic partners who offer mobility schemes. An exchange programme allows you to attend a university abroad while paying UG tuition and earning credit toward your UG degree. Who qualifies to Study Abroad programme?  The programmes are open to all University of Ghana students: Undergraduate Students:
  • You should currently be in level 200, 300
  • For the general exchange program, a minimum overall CGPA of 3.0 in current completed courses is required.
  • You must be registered full-time with the University of Ghana.
  • You must have a valid passport.
Graduate Students:
  • Masters who have completed their 1st year
  • PhD students in the 2nd year who have started their apprenticeship.

Cost for the Programme

Generally, student exchanges are self-sponsored, i.e., students are responsible for their travel costs, including visa, accommodation, health insurance, books, and out-of-pocket expenses. However, fees are waived by host institutions, and therefore, students are required to pay their UG tuition fees. Students are expected, in some case,s to pre-finance their return air tickets and accommodation expenses.

How to Apply

  1. Do a Little Scout
Identify the partner university you would like to attend and the courses at the partner university that you wish to take. Some factors you may consider while doing your research: the language(s) of instruction the school’s academic strengths (some of our partner institutions are world-famous in certain specializations) your travel interests the local culture and climate. Be sure to read carefully the partner institution's information to see if there are any restrictions for exchange. For instance, some schools only accept undergraduate students, students from certain faculties, etc. This is all indicated on the legend of the partner Institutions page. The online application will not allow you to apply for institutions that you are not eligible to attend.        2. Attend the Study Abroad Clinic Interested students must attend the Study Abroad Clinic to discuss their intended programmes including a selection of courses offered at host universities. The Study Abroad Clinic is organized once every semester (proposed). During the session, you will meet and hear from our Study Abroad alumni, staff and faculty about their experiences in studying abroad, get advice and guidance on a wide range of topics including how to write a Letter of Motivation/ Letter of Intent/ Statement of Purpose, CVs, as well as financial and travel arrangements. The date of the Clinic is relayed in the student mail.      3.Submit your Application Submit the application to your Head of Department (HoD) to be officially nominated.  Include the following in the application:
  • Name (as it appears in your passport)
  • Level of studies (graduate or undergraduate)
  • Field of study
  • Contact number
  • UG e-mail address
  • Emergency contact details
     4. Application documents The Study Abroad Center will contact you upon receipt of your nomination to submit the following application documents (create a link to the application form). A letter of motivation indicating why the student would like to attend the programme A well-written Letter of Motivation/Letter of Intent/Statement of Purpose explaining the nature of studies/research to be undertaken; the rationale for study in at the host institution and for the choice of institution, programme; and how the proposed programme of study/research will relate to their future career (maximum two pages). In addition, the write-up should address your level of independence, comfort with ambiguity, and the personal tools you will use to navigate a new country and culture.         5. Proofread your write-up!! Once you have completed your write-up, check it through thoroughly. You should make sure all the information you have cited is accurate. Correct spelling and punctuation are also essential. Write in clear sentences and structure your write-up in a logical format that is easy for the reader to follow. It is easy to miss errors in your own work, so ask someone else to proofread.        6.Letter of support/ recommendation from the head of the department This letter of recommendation should include the name of the student, academic level achievement in general, why the recommender believes the applicant will be a successful participant in the selected programme, and an evaluation of the applicant’s independence, adaptability, and cultural awareness. The letter should also indicate that the student will return to UG to continue their studies.
  • Current Curriculum Vitae(CV);
  • Two passport-size photos.
  • Original academic transcripts;
  • Scanned copy of passport details page;
  • Other documents are specified in the nomination letter.
  • The documents must be satisfactorily written and submitted before the appropriate deadline to sacip@ug.edu.gh and copied to arip@ug.edu.gh

Course Exemption Form

Collect a course exemption form from the Study Abroad Center. Submit the form together with the list of courses offered at the host university to your HoD for approval.   PLEASE NOTE: Your HoD should be notified if you cannot find the required courses you wish to take at the host university, to enable them to recommend alternative courses for replacement. These courses will count towards your graduation. Students are ultimately responsible for ensuring that they meet all credit requirements. Upon approval from the HoD, submit the form to the Dean of your school for signature. Submit the completed form, together with other required documents, to the Study Abroad Centre and sign a student exchange/ study abroad agreement form.  
  1. Processing
The study abroad center will do the initial processing of applications and submit them to the partner institution. Some of the institutions will email you an application and course selection form, which students will complete online.       2.Ready to go! Successful applicants will be notified by the partner university, and an offer of admission letter will be forwarded to them to enable them to start their visa application.  The Study Abroad Centre will also provide students with letters of introduction to facilitate visa acquisition. Tentative Application Timelines First Semester (August to December): December 20 Second Semester (January to April): September 15     3. Before You Leave Pre-departure Orientation: (PICTURE) The Study Abroad Centre organizes a pre-departure orientation for all outbound/exchange students to educate students on immigration and safety issues, comportment at host institutions, time management, how to relate to your new environments (people and cultures) and other traveling and general composure tips.  

While You are Away

       1. Academic Matters: If you have any problems or queries regarding academic matters while studying abroad, which cannot be resolved at the host university, contact your department (Cc us) to enable them suggest suitable alternatives or solutions where you are struggling with courses/module choices.       2.Have Home in Mind: You must continue to check your UG e-mail account throughout your period abroad as IPO will contact you regularly through your UG e-mail address.    

Returning to UG

    Grade Transfers Your grades are converted and entered into your academic records once they are received from the host university.  Your department will be engaged in the conversion process.         1. Course Registration We encourage you to meet your financial obligations to UG to enable you register online upon your return to the university.  You will be required to submit a proof of payment (receipt) to IPO. Upon receipt of the document, IPO will provide you a letter of support to be submitted to Academic Affairs to allow you access to register online.       2. Share your Experiences: Upon your arrival, students are requested to submit reports about their programmes to the Study abroad office. These all-important reports will help enhance the work of the Centre. Tag us when you post your photos and stories on all our social media handles    3. The Study Abroad Alumni: You now become a Study Abroad Alumnus.  The Alumni are students who have study abroad experiences and are ambassadors in encouraging students to apply to Study Abroad through interactions on campus and during the various Study Abroad Clinics.
