NTC Reschedules 2026 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE)
The National Teaching Council (NTC) has officially revised the start date for the 2026 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE 1) following the declaration of a statutory public holiday.
In a public notice issued, the NTC announced that the exam, originally set to begin on Monday, March 23, 2026, will now commence one day later on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. This adjustment ensures candidates and invigilators can observe the holiday without disruption.

The change aligns with the government’s Executive Instrument declaring Monday, March 23, 2026, an additional public holiday to mark Eid-ul-Fitr and Shaqq Day celebrations. Since Saturday, March 21, 2026, falls on a weekend (already a statutory holiday), the extra day off was granted under Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601) to allow nationwide observance.
Key Message from NTC: “The change has become necessary due to the statutory public holiday to be observed on Monday, 23rd March 2026. Candidates are advised to take note of the change and comply accordingly. All other arrangements remain unchanged.”
Revised Examination Schedule (Confirmed)
- Tuesday, March 24, 2026 — General Professional Knowledge
- Wednesday, March 25, 2026 — Grade-Level Specialism Pedagogy
- Thursday, March 26, 2026 — Multiple Subjects Content / Single Subjects Specialism
The exams are expected to run from 7:30 AM onward at designated centres nationwide. No changes to centres, formats, content areas, or registration status.
Reasons
The GTLE is a mandatory requirement under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023) for anyone seeking to enter or continue in the teaching profession in Ghana. Passing it grants full licensure from the NTC, enabling posting by the Ghana Education Service (GES) or private employment.
- Newly qualified teachers from colleges/universities
- Unlicensed practising teachers
- Resitters from previous failed attempts
Failure to sit or pass means you cannot legally teach in Ghanaian schools.
