Content Areas & Competencies

1. Nature of Science

  • Competencies:

    • Understand the nature of science and its applications.

    • Recognize the various branches of science.

    • Apply scientific methods to solve everyday problems.

  • Descriptive Statements:

    • Explain the historical development of science.

    • Differentiate between natural and applied sciences.

    • Use the scientific method to investigate real-world issues.


2. Life Science

  • Competencies:

    • Demonstrate knowledge of the characteristics of living things.

    • Understand cell biology, human anatomy, and plant physiology.

    • Analyze disease transmission and control.

  • Descriptive Statements:

    • Compare living and non-living things.

    • Describe the structure and function of plant and animal cells.

    • Explain the human organ systems and their functions.

    • Discuss plant structure and photosynthesis.

    • Identify symptoms, transmission, and prevention of common diseases.


3. Physical Sciences

  • Competencies:

    • Understand matter, acid-base chemistry, and measurement.

    • Analyze energy, motion, pressure, and basic electronics.

  • Descriptive Statements:

    • Classify matter based on properties.

    • Explain acids, bases, and salts with examples.

    • Measure and convert physical quantities (e.g., length, mass).

    • Describe energy transformations (e.g., mechanical to electrical).

    • Apply Newton’s laws of motion in real-life situations.

    • Calculate displacement, velocity, and acceleration.

    • Explain pressure and its applications (e.g., hydraulics).

    • Identify electronic circuit components (resistors, capacitors).


4. Agricultural Science

  • Competencies:

    • Apply agricultural practices in crop and animal production.

  • Descriptive Statements:

    • Explain modern farming techniques.

    • Discuss livestock management and crop cultivation.


5. Environmental Science

  • Competencies:

    • Understand environmental cycles, ecosystems, and human impact.

    • Analyze climate change and pollution.

  • Descriptive Statements:

    • Describe the water, carbon, and nitrogen cycles.

    • Explain air mass movement and weather patterns.

    • Analyze food chains and ecological balance.

    • Assess human impacts on air, water, and soil.

    • Discuss emerging issues (e.g., plastic waste, e-waste, global warming).
