Step 1: Apply for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

In the UK, teachers must have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) to teach in most schools. Fortunately, Ghana is one of the countries whose teaching qualifications are recognized for QTS.

Who Is Eligible?

Teachers from the following countries can apply for QTS if they specialize in languages, mathematics, or science and teach students aged 11-16:

  • Ghana

  • India

  • Jamaica

  • Nigeria

  • Singapore

  • South Africa

What You Need to Apply

Before submitting your application, check if you meet the requirements. You’ll need: Your NTC license & teacher registration number Bachelor’s degree certificate Teaching transcripts Employment history (appointment letters, reference letters, etc.) Proof of English proficiency (if required)

How to Apply

  1. Visit the UK QTS application portal

  2. Verify your email and browser

  3. Submit your documents

  4. Wait for approval

Once approved, you’ll receive a QTS number, which serves as your UK teaching license.

Can You Teach in the UK Without QTS?

Yes—but only for four years under the "4-Year Rule."

  • If you’re a qualified teacher from Ghana, you can teach in England without QTS for up to 4 years.

  • However, after this period, you must obtain QTS to continue teaching in most state schools.

Exceptions:

You cannot teach under the 4-year rule in: Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) Alternative Provision Academies Alternative Provision Free Schools

Alternative Route: Assessment-Only QTS

If you don’t qualify for automatic QTS recognition, you can still get certified through Assessment-Only QTS.

Requirements:

✔ 2+ years of teaching experience (in at least two different schools)

✔ Bachelor’s degree

✔ GCSE-level English & Math proficiency (or equivalent)

✔ Science proficiency (if teaching primary school)

This route is great for experienced teachers who don’t have formal training but have substantial classroom experience.

Why Get QTS?

While some schools hire teachers without QTS, having it boosts your job prospects and allows you to: Teach in state-funded schools long-term Access better salary scales Gain professional recognition
