Background: Education Minister Sets Deadline for Final Teacher Licensure Exam
The Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the final opportunity for candidates to write the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) must conclude no later than August 30, 2025.
Speaking to the media, the Minister emphasized the need for a firm deadline and urged all stakeholders to collaborate with the Registrar of the National Teaching Council (NTC) to ensure the process is completed within the stipulated timeframe.
“If there is a last opportunity for those who sat and couldn’t make it, that process should not travel beyond 30th August.” — Hon. Haruna Iddrisu
Key Reforms in Teacher Licensure Examination
The Minister acknowledged concerns surrounding the licensure exams and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reforming teacher assessment and certification processes.
He commended the committee reviewing the teacher licensure framework, highlighting their recommendations to shift from a purely paper-based exam to a more comprehensive and practical assessment model.
The new system will include: ✅ Supervised practicum evaluations ✅ Structured mentorship programmes
These changes aim to ensure that newly trained teachers demonstrate not just theoretical knowledge, but actual classroom competence.
Implementation Timeline
The reforms will take effect after the final resit opportunity for candidates yet to take the current exam. The goal is to raise education standards by ensuring certified teachers possess both academic knowledge and practical teaching skills before entering the classroom.
Meanwhile, teachers nationwide have already registered for this year’s GTLE, with preparations in full swing. Many await official confirmation, as timetables have been issued, and candidates are set to write the exam later this month.
