Sociology Programme Overview Aims and Objectives The programme aims to produce graduates equipped with critical and analytical skills to meet the educational, administrative, and resource needs of the country. Specific Objectives:
  • Develop students’ understanding of social relationships, organizations, and power structures.
  • Enhance skills in data interpretation and analysis of social processes.
  • Strengthen social research methods and project evaluation abilities.
  • Foster critical thinking on social issues and problems.

Admission Requirements WASSCE Applicants
  • Minimum Aggregate: 36
  • Credit Passes (A1–C6) in 6 subjects (3 Core + 3 Electives).
SSSCE Applicants
  • Minimum Aggregate: 24
  • Credit Passes (A–D) in 6 subjects (3 Core + 3 Electives).
Core Subjects: English, Mathematics, Integrated Science/Social Studies. Graduation Requirements
  • Complete 17+ courses (minimum 51 credits in Sociology).
  • Maintain a minimum grade of ‘D’ (CGPA ≥ 1.5).
  • Regular attendance & class participation required.
Assessment & Grading System Course Evaluation:
  • End-of-Semester Exam: 60%
  • Assignments/Quizzes: 40%

  • First Class: 3.6–4.0
  • Second Class (Upper): 3.0–3.5
  • Second Class (Lower): 2.5–2.9

  • Second Semester: SOC 111 – Introduction to Sociology II

  • First Semester: SOC 201 (Foundations), SOC 214 (Social Psychology)
  • Second Semester: SOC 204 (Ghana’s Social Structure), SOC 211 (Social Statistics)

  • Core Courses: Sociological Theory, Social Research Methods
  • Electives: Sociology of Health, Gender Studies, Criminology, Urban Sociology

  • Core Courses: Sociological Theory II, Long Essay (SOC 499)
  • Electives: Sociology of Migration, Environmental Sociology, Conflict Resolution

Overview of the School of Social Sciences The School of Social Sciences is dedicated to developing world-class human resources and capabilities to meet national development needs and global challenges.
