The UPSA Law School invites applications for admission to its BACHELOR OF LAWS (LLB) Degree programme for every Academic Year. The LLB Degree programme is offered in two cohorts:
  • Three (3)-Year LL. B Degree Programme for First Degree Holders • Four (4)-Year LL. B Degree Programme for Non-First Degree Holders
The programme is rigorous and prepares students for admission into professional training at the Ghana School of Law. Three (3)-Year Post First Degree LLB Programme This is an evening school programme designed for students with a first degree in any discipline who wish to enrol in the LL. B programme with the likely intention of becoming lawyers in the future. Note 1: The 3-Year Post-First Degree LL. B Programme is an undergraduate programme. Eligibility: Interested applicants must have been awarded a first degree in any relevant discipline from a recognised institution and must have obtained a minimum of a Second-Class Lower.

  • WASSCE and SSSCE/GBCE applicants must have at least credit passes (i.e. grade A1-C6 and grade A-D respectively) in three core subjects, including English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science/Social Studies, in addition to any three elective subjects.
Note 1: Current final year SHS students, who will be writing WASSCE/GBCE in July/August 2025, are also eligible to apply. They will be required to indicate their WASSCE/GBCE index numbers on the online application form.
  • WAEC General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level must have passes in any three (3) subjects (at least one of the passes should be grade D or better) plus a pass in General Paper. In addition, the applicant must have had credit passes (Grade 6) or better in five (5) subjects, including English Language, Mathematics and any Science Subject at the GCE Ordinary (‘O’) Level.
  • General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE)/ Cambridge GCE ‘O’ and ‘A'’ Level applicants must have at least five (5) credit passes, including English and Mathematics at the GCSE/Baccalaureate/Cambridge ‘O’ Level and three subjects at the ‘A’ Level.

Admissions Requirement Overview Admission to the University of Ghana School of Law requires a solid academic background. High school graduates must have excellent grades to qualify. For postgraduate programmes, a bachelor's degree and, often, some professional experience are necessary. Additionally, all candidates must pass an entrance examination and an interview to demonstrate their aptitude for legal studies. REQUIREMENTS FOR UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME IN LAW Applicants with WASSCE/SSSCE Qualification
  1. General Entry Requirements for the Full-Time Degree Programmes
An applicant for admission to an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Ghana must have at least credits (A1 - C6 in WASSCE or A - D in SSSCE) in the following subjects: • The Four Core Subjects: English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science/Core Science, and Social Studies. • Three elective subjects.
  1. Calculation of Aggregates for Admission
The total aggregate of results, comprising six subjects (relevant core and electives), should not exceed: • Aggregate 24 for Regular admissions. • Aggregate 30 for Distance Education admissions. For Science-Related Disciplines: • Aggregate is calculated using English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science/Core Science, and three elective subjects in the Sciences (refer to specific programme elective requirements below). • Note: Social Studies credit is excluded from the calculation. For Non-Science Disciplines: • Aggregate is calculated using English, Core Mathematics, Social Studies/Life Skills, and three elective subjects in General Arts/Business (refer to specific programme elective requirements below). • Note: Integrated Science/Core Science credit is excluded from the calculation.   REQUIREMENTS FOR POST-FIRST DEGREE LL.B. PROGRAMME
  1. B) POST FIRST DEGREE INTAKES 2024/2025 ACADEMIC YEAR
(i) Admissions Requirements The entry requirement for the LL.B Post-First Degree (PFD) Programme is a good first degree from a recognised University. A recognised University refers to all Universities accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC). Suitably qualified applicants are required to participate in a selection examination and an interview. (ii) Promotion Requirements from Level 200 to 400
  1. Pass: A student is deemed to have passed if he/she has a minimum of 30 credits and a maximum of 42 credits of core courses and electives at the end of Level 200.
  2. Withdrawal: A student who does not pass as prescribed by (2a) shall be asked by the Registrar to withdraw from the University.
(iii) Requirements for Graduation (LLB) A student shall be deemed to have satisfied the requirements for graduation if:
  1. a)He/she has satisfied all General University and School requirements;
  2. b)He/she has accumulated a minimum of 90 credits, including all core courses;
  3. c)He/she must not have failed any of the core courses (where failure means a grade below D);
  4. d)He/she must not have failed more than 12 credits of elective courses (where failure means a grade below D).
Qualification The minimum entry is a Second Class (Lower Division) Degree in any discipline from a recognised University (i.e. Universities recognised and/or accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC). The DEADLINE for the submission of applications and supporting documents online is 11:59 p.m. or 23:59 GMT on Saturday, 31st May 2025, not only for this year.  Date for Entrance Examination: Saturday, 14th June 2025, not only for this year. Dates for Selection Interviews: Monday, 7th July to Friday, 11th July 2025, not only for this year. Masters Admission

INTRODUCTION Starting September 2025, the University of Ghana School of Law (UGSoL) will introduce thirty-eight (38) new graduate programmes - nineteen (19) Master of Laws (LL.M.) programmes and nineteen (19) Master of Arts (M.A.) programmes. These programmes will replace and expand the current postgraduate course offerings at the school. The Master of Laws (LL.M.) programmes will provide specialized legal training to persons with previous backgrounds in law and equip them with knowledge and skills to navigate relevant work-related legal and other regulatory situations. These programmes additionally provide opportunities and substantive training to engage in postgraduate research. Doctor of Philosophy in Law The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a research-intensive degree and the most advanced degree offered by the University of Ghana School of Law. The rationale for the PhD programme is to provide advanced training for scholars to deepen and broaden their understanding of Law.   BRIEF DETAILS ON EACH OF THE PhD COURSES: FLAW 701:    Philosophical Approaches to the Study of Law This course aims to provide students with the opportunity to undertake a detailed study of the philosophical approaches to the study of law. This course provides students with a selective overview of major developments in legal theory through the 20th and into the 21st century. It is intended to provide grounding for further jurisprudential work by students during their studies. Topics include legal realism, utilitarianism, feminism, post-modernism, and structuralism, among other theories of law. FLAW 702:    Comparative and Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the Study of Law and Society This course seeks to provide an overview of a range of approaches to comparative and interdisciplinary research in law. It introduces students to a wide range of interdisciplinary, critical, and socio-legal scholarship. Additionally, it enables students to engage with the law from several distinct disciplinary perspectives, including economics, geography, philosophy, sociology, and political science. The course will also explore the multiple ways in which theory and method are intertwined in legal research. Topics include Law and Economics, Law and Geography, Legal Pluralism, and Law and Society. FLAW 703:    Advanced Legal Research Methodologies This course is designed to give students a detailed insight into a variety of theoretical approaches to legal research and to the methods and methodologies used in academic legal research. This course is intended to improve skills in research methodology and qualitative and quantitative analyses. Specific topics include hypothesis testing; techniques of effective proposal writing, approaches to legal research; and the ethics of legal research. FLAW 704:    Legal Aspects of Regional Integration in Africa This course will focus on the legal dimensions of regional economic, social, and political integration in Africa. The course employs a relational framework as the fulcrum of analysis to address the problems of integration and thus aid Africa’s long-term political and economic growth. Topics include the theories of integration, the political economy of regional integration, and the fundamental obstacles to regional integration in Africa FLAW 705:    Law and Development in Africa This course examines the scope, strengths, and limitations of law as an instrument of development and explores how law can be consciously used to aid human, socio-political, and economic development in Africa. Focusing on the national, regional, and international perspectives on the issues in question, the course explores the contributions that law, legal theory, and legal institutions can make toward the realisation of development in Africa. The course thus draws on other disciplines such as Economics, Sociology, and Political Science. Topics include Theories of Law and Development, Political Governance in Africa, Corruption, Mismanagement of Resources, and Poverty in Africa. FLAW 706:    Trends in Legal Pedagogy This course provides opportunities for students to discuss various methods employed in law teaching. Some of the approaches include the Socratic method, experiential learning techniques, the clinical teaching method, and the multi-disciplinary and trans-systemic legal pedagogy. Topics include Pedagogy vs Andragogy, Technology, and Experiential learning. FLAW 707:    Legal Traditions of the World This is a comparative study of the legal traditions of the World. The course affords an opportunity to study the major legal traditions that have influenced the world. Topics include the origins, geographic locations, and the main tenets of the common law legal tradition, the civil law legal tradition, the Islamic legal tradition, and the indigenous legal tradition. FLAW 708:     Gender and International Legal Studies Gender and International Legal Studies uses gendered theory to engage with systems and institutions of political, social, economic, legal, and cultural power. The course examines gender roles and relations as a form of power to organize society, institutions, rights, responsibilities, and access to resources. Topics taught include Feminist Theory and Masculinity, Gender and International Security, and Gender and Disability. FLAW 709:    Advanced Constitutional Law This course provides a comprehensive understanding of the different purposes and functions of the Constitution of Ghana. While the focus of the course is the Ghanaian constitutional system, the course will draw on insights from other jurisdictions, thus providing an introduction to the field of comparative constitutional law. The course also examines a range of rights-related features of the Ghanaian Constitution and investigates issues such as the effectiveness of constitutions at protecting human rights and democratic government. Topics include the role of the Supreme Court in the growth of the 1992 Constitution and understanding the electoral systems of major jurisdictions of the world. FLAW 712:     Advanced International Commercial Arbitration This course undertakes an in-depth study of specific topics in international commercial arbitration from both a theoretical and practical perspective. It also provides a critical analysis of the principles and law of international commercial arbitration, including the legal foundation for international arbitration, the international soft law applicable to the conduct of international arbitrations, and the various legal issues that arise in the recognition and enforcement of international arbitration agreements and the resulting arbitral awards. Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons (Ghanaian and foreign) for admission into the 3-Year Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree programme of the University of Cape Coast. Applicants are to note that the programme is strictly fee-paying. 1.0 PROGRAMME GOAL AND STUDENT PROFILE The main goal of the Law programme, which is in line with the University’s mission, is to produce high-caliber legal scholars and researchers who will positively influence decision-making and implementation at all levels of the corporate and public (including judiciary, security and intelligence) sectors, journalism, politics, private affairs and other areas.
