 A University-Approved Format

When applying for a teaching position at a university, your curriculum vitae (CV) needs to be more than just a resume. It's a comprehensive document that details your academic, professional, and research background. To make sure your CV stands out for the right reasons, it's essential to follow a clear, approved format. Here is a breakdown of the standard CV format for academic staff, which has been approved by the Academic Board.

1. Personal Information

This section covers all your basic details. Be sure to include your name, date of birth and age, sex, nationality, and hometown. You should also list your religion, marital status, and both your permanent and current addresses. Make sure to provide your institutional email address and phone number. Finally, list your web presence with links to your professional profiles, such as your Google Scholar, ResearchGate, or ORCID profiles.

2. Educational and Professional Background

This section should list all your completed and ongoing education. Use a clear format that includes the institution, program of study, and the period of attendance.
  • Example:
    • UCC, M.Ed/MPhil (Administration in Higher Education), 2010-2014

3. Educational and Professional Qualification

This section is similar to the one above but focuses on the qualifications you've been awarded. List the institution, the qualification received, and the date it was awarded.
  • Example:
    • UCC, M.Ed/MPhil (Administration in Higher Education), 2014

4. Employment History

Starting with your most recent position, list your work history. For each entry, include the dates, your rank, and your position.

5. Leadership and Administrative Positions

If you've held any leadership or administrative roles, list them here with the corresponding dates.

6. Research Interest/Areas of Specialization

Clearly state your research interests and areas of specialization. This helps the review committee quickly understand your academic focus.

7. Achievements/Awards/Grants

Document any significant achievements, awards, or grants you've received, including scholarships or post-doctoral studies. Include the dates for each item.

8. Workshops/Conferences/Seminars Attended

List any relevant workshops, conferences, or seminars you've attended. For each one, note the dates, location, and your role (e.g., presenter, attendee, panelist).

9. Teaching Experiences/Courses Taught

Provide a detailed list of your teaching experience and the courses you have taught.

10. Publications

This is a critical section for an academic CV. Organize your publications into the following categories:
  • Refereed Journal Articles
  • Books, Technical Reports, Research Projects, Book Chapters, Modules
  • Conference Proceedings

11. Committee/Board Engagements

List any committees or boards you've served on. For each, specify the name of the committee, your role, and the dates of your service.

12. Supervision

Include details on both undergraduate and postgraduate students you have supervised, indicating whether the supervision is completed or ongoing.

13. Official Mentoring Role

If you have held any official mentoring roles, list them here.

14. Community Service

Document any community service you have been involved in, including the name of the service, dates, and location.

15. Membership of Professional Bodies/Associations

List the professional bodies and associations you are a member of, along with the date you joined.

16. Hobbies/Interests (Optional)

This section is optional, but it can provide some insight into your personality outside of academia.

17. Referees

Provide the contact information for a maximum of three referees who can speak to your professional and academic abilities.

18. Date of CV

Finally, be sure to include the date your CV was last updated.
