Program Description
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Toronto (U of T) is a fully funded scholarship program for graduate studies at Canada’s leading institution of learning, discovery, and knowledge creation. U of T is proud to be one of the world’s top research-intensive universities, driven to invent and innovate.
Prospective Mastercard Foundation Scholars will develop their capacity and networks to engage in diverse healthcare professions and healthcare ecosystems in Africa. Upon completion of the program, it’s expected that Scholars will return to their home countries and engage in self-employment or work in a range of health-related professions to advance health outcomes within their countries.
Eligibility and Application
The Scholarship provides citizens from Sub-Saharan Africa with access to relevant university education. For the 2026-2027 cycle, this opportunity is open to recent alumni and graduating students at Africa Health Collaborative partner universities. Scholarships will be awarded to those who have demonstrated academic excellence in associated health-related disciplines and a personal commitment to going back and giving back to their home countries upon degree completion.
Scholarship Benefits
Scholars receive full financial assistance for the duration of their graduate studies. This includes:
- Travel expenses to Canada (including passport and visa application fees).
- Tuition.
- Housing.
- Food.
- Health insurance.
- Laptop.
- Learning materials.
- Other expenses.

For the 2026-2027 cycle, we are pleased to announce the start of recruitment! Begin by attending an info session (details below). Then, proceed to Step Three: Begin your graduate application to the department/program of your interest from the University of Toronto, School of Graduate Studies website. The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) is the central location for graduate applications at the university. Each department and program area will inform you as to the specific requirements of their department and provide you with subsequent dates for the submission of supplementary information. This is an online process that will require you to upload documents to your application. Follow the instructions of your prospective department once you receive them.

Areas of Study
For the 2025-2026 academic year, scholarship applications were accepted for one of the following programs:
- Master of Occupational and Environmental Health.
- Master of Social and Behavioural Health Sciences.
- Master of Health Administration.
- Master of Financial Insurance.
- Master of Engineering (Biomedical).
- Master of Biotechnology (for May 2026 start).

Step Three
Complete the Mastercard Foundation Doctoral Scholarship application. The link to the application form will be shared at the upcoming info sessions. Deadline for submission of the completed application is October 10, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. EST (Toronto time). If your application for the Mastercard Foundation scholarship meets all criteria and is approved by the Scholarship Admission Committee, you will receive an email to move forward to step four. These notifications to successful applicants will be made by November 1, 2025.
Step Four
If you are shortlisted for the Mastercard Foundation Doctoral Scholarship, you will be invited to complete a program application to the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) program from the University of Toronto, Dalla Lana School of Public Health, which is due by November 21, 2025. The Dalla Lana School of Public Health will inform you as to the specific requirements of their department and provide you with subsequent dates for the submission of supplementary information. This is an online process that will require you to upload documents to your application. Please follow the instructions once you receive them.

Mastercard Foundation Scholars are provided with a variety of mentoring and transition assistance programs. This includes an extended orientation prior to and upon arrival to become familiar with the University’s academic requirements and practices, and will also introduce students to various social, co-curricular, and professional opportunities.
Advisors and Administrators
Advisors and administrators within the departments, faculties, and Centre for International Experience regularly interact with Scholars and help students navigate through university life. Student mentors also provide peer support. These resources will help with transitioning to U of T and support academic and personal success.
